Run-down library system loses readers
VietNamNet Bridge – HCM City has 24 district libraries and many universities and college libraries but a lack of funding and poor management has strained the library system. Readers search for books at the HCM City General Sciences Library. A lack of funding and poor management has strained the library system in HCM City. Most librarians are concerned that, with shortages in new books and periodicals, they can no longer attract young readers, particularly students who carry a heavy load of lessons and homework. "I don't like reading books at my school's library," said a third-year student at HCM City's Technical Teachers' University (HTTU). "It's run down and has only old books. I read books or research online for my exams at home." A librarian at HTTU said that "most of our books are out-of-date, with many published in the 1980s or even earlier." "We've got only one or two copies of most of the high-demand science and technology books," she added. Each library receives several dozen million dong each year from the city to buy new books and periodicals. Bui Xuan Duc, director of the city's General Sciences Library, said that funding for his library had recently increased but book and periodical prices were also increasing. "We simply can't provide enough good material for readers, particularly teachers and students from universities and institutes," he said. Established in 1968, the library is one of the largest in the region, and serves as a depository for international organisations like the World Bank, UNESCO and the Food and Agriculture Organisation. With its huge collection of more than 500,000 books, newspapers and journals, 4,000 microfilms, CD-ROMs, music, maps, videos and more, the library is a rich resource for students, researchers, teachers, foreign scholars and local residents. "To improve our business, we have worked to hold a book-exchange agreement with more than 30 libraries and information centres across the globe," said Duc. He added that the library in co-operation with its foreign partners, including South Korea-based SK Telecom and Amcham member United Way International, would offer new computers and telecommunications technology to fulfill the needs of its visitors more efficiently. Around 30 computers and PCs can be used by low-vision visitors. According to Huynh Cong Hung, head of the city's People's Council's Culture and Society Office, a project to improve libraries and create a co-operative library system should be completed. "Libraries should improve internet connections, and a library network would help students share information related to their studies," he said. Hung said that the city government planned to provide

New TV series honours young hero volunteers
VietNamNet Bridge – The first episode of a television series on the life of members of the Youth Volunteer Force (YVF), which played an important role in the Anti-American War, was screened yesterday, Sept 19, on HCM City Television. Gather for the cause: A scene from Huyen Thoai 1C (The Legend of Soldiers), a 22-part TV series on the life of members of the Youth Volunteer Force, being screened every evening on HCM City Television. The 22-part series, Huyen Thoai 1C (The Legend of Soldiers), is based on a screenplay by Doan Minh Tuan and Anh Dong, the latter a former member of the YVF. The series' director, People's Artist Nguyen Thanh Van, and his staff spent two years on making the film, which was funded by the culture ministry. The film tells the story of young soldiers who volunteered to work on the 1C line crossing the southwest region, a fierce battlefield between 1967 and 1975. 1C is known as the "Heroic Route" where more than 800 members of the YVF faced daunting challenges in facilitating the transfer of thousands of soldiers, wounded soldiers, and army officers from the North to South and vice versa. More than 13,000 tonnes of weapons and several thousands tonnes of drugs and foods were also transported during the period. The members of the force joined over 200 battles. "Through the film, we wanted to highlight the Young Volunteer Force and the remarkable spirit shown by members in contributing to the country's freedom," Van said. "We want to help young audiences understand the spirit and revolutionary cause of the force in Vietnamese history," he added. After selecting the actors for all the roles, Van and his crew spent months filming in Mekong Delta provinces of Long An, Kien Giang, An Giang, Can Tho and Can Gio, a rural district in HCM City. Produced by the private studio Tay Nam Film, Huyen Thoai 1C is aired every day at 5.30pm on HTV9.

Lost works go on show to depict romantic poet's life
VietNamNet Bridge – An original collection of poems by Han Mac Tu, initially published in 1936 and thought to be lost to the annals of time, will be released on Saturday to mark the late poet's 100th birthday. Young love: A new print of Gai Que (Countryside Girl) by Han Mac Tu will be released on Saturday to celebrate his 100th birthday. Having died at the tender age of 28 due to leprosy, Han Mac Tu's 34-poem anthology, entitled Gai Que (Countryside Girl), was the only work to be published before his death by Tan Dan Publishing House in Ha Noi. Han Mac Tu was part of the Tho Moi movement (new poetic trend) in Viet Nam at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1992, the Writers Association Publishing House and HCM City's Literature Research and Teaching Association printed a collection of poetry representing the movement that included a reprint of Gai Que. A selection of 21 poems, hand- written version of Gai Que has been reprinted many times, however, the complete and original collection had been greatly sought after by the publishing house until Dang Ngoc Tien, a Vietnamese-French reseacher, recently handed it over. Tien's copy of Gai Que is typed and was owned by Hoang Thi Kim Cuc, the main character in Han Mac Tu's famous poem Day Thon Vi Da (Here Vi Da Village). Released The new print, being released by the publishing house and Phuong Nam Book Company, consists of research and commentaries on the poet's life and career. It also documents the character Cuc, who was one of his lovers. Han Mac Tu, whose real name was Nguyen Trong Tri, was born in the central province of Quang Binh. At the age of 21, he left his home for Sai Gon, now HCM City, and worked as a reporter for the Cong Luan (Public Voice) newspaper. "Han Mac Tu was a pioneer who laid the foundation for surrealist elements in Vietnamese poetry. Moon, water and air are the main components that make up the universe of his poems," said critic Thuy Khe. Han Mac Tu, who never married but dated several beautiful women, is also one of the few modern Vietnamese poets to have detailed biographies written about him, including Han Mac Tu in 1942 by author Tran Thanh Mai. The house where the poet lived out his final days, in Quy Nhon City in the central province of Binh Dinh, now serves as a popular memorabilia, in which all of his belongings remain intact. Respectfully, the clock has been stopped at the moment the poet passed away.
