Critical thinking competition helps pupils sharpen their wits
|
A competition kicked off on Monday to help elementary-school students refine their critical-thinking skills.
The competition, whose subject is "Who is more sharp-witted?", was organised by the Ministry of Education and Training in collaboration with the Central Team Council and FrieslandCampina and will end on December 16.
There will be a total of 68 prizes worth VND217 million (US$10,432), and three rounds at the school, regional and national levels. The highest prize for the winner is VND50 million ($2,403).
In May, the Education Research Institute conducted surveys in Ha Noi and HCM City that found that more than 80 per cent of elementary-school pupils lacked practical skills, and were not skilled in analysing and solving problems.
Exhibition features installations made from sprouts, scooters
New work by local artists will be presented at an exhibit that opens to the public tonight in Ha Noi.
Entitled Living Jewel, the exhibit includes artist Le Huy Hoang's latest installation Rain, made from cabbage sprouts, acupuncture needles and nylon threads.
With the support of a lighting system, the needles look like rain over the green sprouts.
Among the other items on display is an Italian Vespa scooter with nacre-inlaid body produced by sculptor Dinh Cong Dat.
To accompany the art, composer Luong Hue Trinh will present her experimental audio work Tro Lai (Come Back).
She draws on both traditional melodies and sounds drawn from daily life to create a unique melange of history and modernity.
Living Jewel will be shown at the Nguy Nhu Kon Tum Auditorium, 19 Le Thanh Tong Street, from 6pm tonight until 3pm tomorrow (Sep 13).
The display is a supporting activity of the Viet Nam Davines Hair Show&Contest 2012 which will take place in Ha Noi on September 20.

Colombian artist explores social inequality in modern art show
|
A solo exhibition of contemporary art by Colombian Johanna Calle will open today at the San Art Gallery in HCM City.
The exhibition is part of Irregular Hexagon: Colombian Art in Residence, a project consisting of six distinct solo exhibitions by Colombian artists in Morocco, Israel, Australia, Turkey, Singapore and Viet Nam.
Johanna's works refer to her work over the last decade, with plants being central to its imagery.
"This is not only because in Colombia the so-called war on drugs is waged mainly in the countryside, but also because the roots of social inequality can be traced back to the moment where the landscape was razed down and its people subjugated, their cosmogony and language replaced by the colonizer's," a press release says.
The exhibition will remain open until October 11.
