UNESCO praises Hanoi’s preservation efforts
The Director of UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre, Kishore Rao, has highlighted the efforts made by Hanoi to preserve the ancient royal citadel of Thang Long. After inspecting the Thang Long Citadel in Hanoi on September 13, Rao said he was delighted to return to the citadel and impressed at the amount of work that the Centre for the Preservation of Thang Long-Hanoi Cultural Heritage has completed since the site was officially recognised as a World Heritage site in 2010. As part of a project funded by Japan from 2010-2012, the centre held a number of seminars to assess the archaeological work that needs to be done at the citadel and completed its management strategy, including an action plan for the period 2012-2015. The centre will continue to carry out the commitments the Government made to the International Council for Monuments and Sites on Thang Long Citadel and will carry on with research and training cadres in the field.

Tourism ministers meet to promote ties
Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Tuan Anh chaired the first Cambodia - Laos -Myanmar- Vietnam (CLMV) Tourism Ministers’ Meeting, which took place in Ho Chi Minh City on September 14. The meeting was attended by Cambodian Tourism Minister Thong Khon, Lao Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism Bosengkham Vongdara, and Myanmar Ambassador to Vietnam Thet Oo. The officials noted the impressive rise in the number of international tourists to the four countries in the past years. In 2011, CLMV welcomed more than 12.3 million visitors, an increase of 14.5 percent over the previous year. Of the total, 17 percent were from the four countries. They reviewed the implementation and of the ministerial joint statement on CLMV tourism cooperation signed in 2010 with a theme of “Four Countries – One Destination”, and examined the mutual support in international tourism events and forums. In terms of cooperation with partners, the ministers highly valued the support of the Centres of ASEAN-Japan and ASEAN - Republic of Korea in personnel training and promoting images of the four countries in the Japanese and Korean markets. Besides, they spoke highly of the helps of the Asian Development Bank in infrastructure development. They also signed a plan of tourism cooperation among the four countries for the 2013-2015 period, which aims to bring into play the achievements and further promote effectiveness of the cooperation, as well as raising the proactive capacity of the four countries in accessing international organisations as a bloc, in order to make them a single destination.

HCM City hosts first Mekong tourism city mayor meeting
Leaders from Ho Chi Minh City of Vietnam, Phnom Penh of Cambodia and Vientiane of Laos gathered in HCM City on Sept. 13 for the first meeting of Mekong sub-regional tourism cities’ mayors. The event, which took place within the framework of the 2012 International Travel Expo-HCM City, aims to the implement sustainable tourism development strategy, contributing to prioritizing tourism cooperation between cities in the Mekong sub-region. Speaking at the meeting, Chairman of the HCM City People’s Committee, Le Hoang Quan, said the city’s tourism sector has developed strongly in recent years. In the 2006-2011 period, the number of international tourists to the city saw an average increase of more than 10 percent, accounting for about 60 percent of the country’s total number of foreign visitors. The sector contributed 43 percent and 11 percent to Vietnam’s total turnover from the non-smoke industry and the city’s GDP, respectively. He pointed out that the municipal authorities always create favourable conditions to develop tourism through a series of policies, promotion solutions and programmes on human resources training. At the conference, the mayors of Ho Chi Minh, Phnom Penh and Vientiane signed a joint statement on intensifying and encouraging travel agencies to cooperate in information exchange and experience sharing on the tourism development planning and promotion. They agreed to cooperate in training and developing human resources for tourism, implementing joint promotion programmes to build the Mekong Sub-region into an attractive destination, and further tighten the relations between countries in the region while strengthening exchanges with other cities outside the region.
