Hoang Su Phi terraced fields recognized as national heritage
On September 16th, in Hoang Su Phi district of the northern mountainous of Ha Giang, the Ha Giang provincial People’s Committee held a ceremony to receive the national heritage certificate for Hoang Su Phi terraced fields from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The magnificent terraced rice fields have been cultivated by local ethnic groups for hundreds of years at an altitude of 1,000m above sea level. The recognised rice fields cover 760ha of the total 3,000ha of fields in six communes, where the fields stretch across enormous mountains. The fields also reflect various cultivation methods deployed by the different ethnic minority groups which inhabit the place. Hoang Su Phi district is now home to more than 60,000 people representing 17 ethnic minority groups. They live mainly by growing rice and other subsidiary crops. Terraced farming helps ensure food security for the whole district, producing 25,000-27,000 tonnes of rice per year. Dam Van Bong, vice secretary of the provincial Party Committee and chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, said that the event has become a pride of the province, especially ethnic people in Hoang Su Phi district. He hoped that local people would continue preserving and upholding the value of the heritage for socio-economic development and tourism promotion. At the ceremony, art performances to praise the homeland, as well as traditional dances and performances of traditional musical instruments, were held./.
