"Antiques" and rare books at International Book Fair in Hanoi
|
VietNamNet Bridge - Readers can admire printers which were manufactured many decades ago and buy rare and authentic books at 50 percent cheaper than the cover prices.
The 4th Vietnam International Book Fair opened on September 17 at the Hanoi Giang Vo Exhibition Center, with a lot of innovative features and benefits for readers.
Entering the main lobby of the Vietnam International Book Fair this year, readers will see two big Typo printers from the war of resistance period, with letters neatly arranged behind, one paper cutting machine that was used by the National Library from 1917 and an old typewriter.
Besides printers, the fair also showcases four large bronze-made poetry books (45 x 65 cm). This is a product of sculptor Pham Van Hang and his students. Hang made this book in five years. The book was recognized as a national record in 2007.
Besides a number of activities on the sidelines, the main activities of the fair are the exchange between publishers, writers and readers.
The fair attracts 82 book distribution companies and publishing houses in the country. This is a great opportunity for readers to visit and explore various genres of books published in Vietnam.
Besides familiar book distributors and publishers like Tri Thuc (Knowledge), Nha Nam, Kim Dong, Tri Viet, there are some other firms that are not strong for PR but own many valuable books like Xunhasaba, Alpha, DongTay, Justice Publishing House, Women's Publishing House, and Science and Technology Publishing House.
Many books are discounted in the book fair.
The most interesting thing for readers is the preferential discount policy that is applied during the fair. Some books are discounted up to 50 percent, like "The World is an Open Book", "Irrational Republic", "Chat in the Bar La Cathedral" (Nobel Prize for Literature 2010), "Henderson, King of Rain "(Nobel Prize for Literature 1976)," Water for the Elephant "," Conversation with God ","No Country" (Kurt Vonnegut).
At the stand of Tri Thuc Publishing House, there are many young people who come to look for books, that are considered "too difficult" to read, such as "Crowd Psychology", "Socratic Dialogue", "Thinking Like System" and "From the Other Side." Unfortunately, the two books that are being waiting for by the readers "Confided Words" by Rosseau and "Identify Power" by Noam Chomsky have not been printed yet to release at the fair.
In the morning of the opening day, the number of visitors were not too crowded, mostly students. It is expected that the number of visitors will increase in the next days. Unfortunately, the book fair was not held on the weekend so that many other people could have attended.
The exhibition will last until September 21, with a lots of workshops to introduce books and cultural activities.

Antiques from a wrecked ship.
The invitation for bids was given by Quang Ngai Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism (DCST) and signed by local People's Committee on September 14, and has a deadline of 17h of September. To be eligible to bid an organisation must prove that they have both the financial capacity and expertise to safely carry out the work.
Three companies that have already placed bids are Dai Minh Salvage and Rescue Company, Kinh Thanh Luu Company in Quang Ngai Province and Doan Anh Duong Company in HCMC.
Five people injured in scuffle.
A nine member board was set up to select the most attractive offer, The deputy head of DCST, Nguyen Dang Vu, is president and Nguyen Dinh Chien, deputy director of the Viet Nam National Museum of History serves as vice president.
In the meantime border guards, police and the civil defense forces will protect the site of the shipwreck. However on September 14 and 15, amid the heavy rain and bad weather, people had sneaked onto site before they were caught by security forces, causing a disturbance in the area.
Vo Tan Men, head of Chau Thuan Bien Village, said, "Previously, five people were injured during a scuffle when they fought for antiques. Since the ship was discovered, this once peaceful town has been turned on its head because of few greedy people."
The local authorities have tried to encourage illegal scavengers to hand over any items they took, but only recovered 36. It is believed that hundreds more are being kept by the people from the village in hopes of selling them to dealers from Binh Duong or HCMC.
"Administrative procedures have delayed professional exploitation of the site. But we are quickly completing the paperwork so as to ensure the safety of the ship's contents."

Egypt gets set for millions of new tourists
|
VietNamNet Bridge – A dancer gracefully slipped the flags of Viet Nam and Egypt from under his costume and held them up while he continued to rotate in an endless circular dance.
Queen of the Nile: Performers from Egypt's Nuba Drums troupe perform in Ha Noi
to promote Egyptian tourism and culture.
That was the highlight of a performance by the Egyptian folk art troupe Nuba Drums to celebrate the 49th anniversary of Viet Nam and Egypt diplomatic relations and promote Egyptian tourism, held yesterday at Sheraton Hotel, Ha Noi.
The performance was joined by artists from the Vietnamese national circus.
The troupe of 16 musicians, singers and dancers came to Viet Nam on Friday. They gave a free performance on Sunday night at the Cong Nhan (Workers) Theatre, Ha Noi, and will have another one at the Hai Phong City Opera House tonight, Sept 18.
Nuba Drums was established in 1990. They use traditional Egyptian instruments to perform folk songs and dances. They have received many awards in Egypt and abroad. This is the first time they have performed in Viet Nam.
On the occasion, representatives from Egypt's tourism offices met with Vietnamese travel agents as well as the Viet Nam National Administration of Tourism to enhance the co-operation between the two countries in the field.
"Egypt, the largest emerging democracy in the Middle East, is ready now more than any other time, especially now that all tourism cities, destinations, and attractions are fully secured, to receive millions of tourists from all over the world," said Egyptian Ambassador to Viet Nam Reda El-Taify.
"Egypt, with its generous people, unique geographical position, and moderate weather most of the year, welcomes you to visit its attractions. We have an old proverb that says whoever comes to visit Egypt and drinks from the Nile River shall return to visit it again, so Egypt welcomes you on your first and upcoming visits," he said.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's Performing Arts Department and the Embassy of Egypt in Ha Noi co-organised the event.
