Vietnam emerges as new favorite of British holidaymakers
Vietnam is becoming an increasingly attractive destination for British tourists, according to a new report released by the UK’s Post Office. According to the Post Office Travel Money’s Fastest Growing Currencies report for June-August, the Vietnamese dong was the fastest-growing foreign currency in the United Kingdom this past summer. The Fastest Growing Currencies review by the Post Office, a retail postal service company that provides postal and banking services in the UK, measures demand for travel to global destinations of British holidaymakers based on currency sales. The annual review revealed a year-on-year growth of 68 percent in currency sales - suggesting a boom in Vietnam holidays, fuelled by the introduction of direct flights last December and a host of new beach resorts. National carrier Vietnam Airlines began service between Gatwick and Hanoi in December 2011, the first direct flights to Vietnam from Britain, reducing the journey by several hours. Another reason for the sharp increase of Britons vacationing in Vietnam is the recent opening of new holiday resorts. Anantara Mui Ne officially opened its doors in April this year, while the InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort made its grand opening in June 2012. More international chain hotels are expected to open in Vietnam in the near future, including the Hilton Da Nang, which plans to welcome its first guests in 2013, and Movenpick Hotels & Resorts’ Quy Nhon due to open 2015. The review also revealed that the other top two growth destinations for British vacationers are Brazil and Hungary, with currency sales for the Brazilian real up 66 percent year-on-year, and the Hungarian forint up 59 percent year-on-year.

RoK-Vietnam cultural week kicks off
A Vietnam - Republic of Korea (RoK) Culture Week opened in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau on September 21. The event is one of the major activities to celebrate the 20th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties and aims to strengthen their traditional friendship and multi-faceted cooperation between the two countries. Addressing the opening ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Ba Ria-Vung Tau provincial People’s Committee, Ho Van Nien, highlighted the fine development of Vietnam-RoK relations, especially in political, diplomatic, and economic fields, as well as trade, investment, culture, and education. Nien said that Ba Ria-Vung Tau province has recently boosted exchanges and cooperation with RoK localities in various areas such as economics, culture, and social affairs. An exhibition of photographs featuring the close relationship between Vietnam and the RoK will also be held during the week-long event. Other activities include a culinary exchange, music and dance performances, a film festival, a Taekwondo tournament, and a friendly football match. As a result of the strategic partnership between the two countries, their two-way trade turnover increased to nearly US$18.6 last year. The RoK has also become one of Vietnam’s largest foreign investors, with a total investment capitalization of US$24 billion in 2011.

Festival raises Vietnam profile in RoK
Vietnam’s history and culture were introduced at a festival held in Seongdong district, Seoul capital, on September 22. Vietnamese brides who were married to men from the Republic of Korea gave an impressive art performance highlighting the cultural traditions of both countries. The women, dressed in Ao Dai (Vietnam’s traditional long dress) and wearing conical hats, performed folk songs, helping Vietnamese nationals in the RoK ease their homesickness. Addressing the event, Park Noh-soo, honorary president of the RoK-Vietnam Friendship Association (KOVIFA), noted that Vietnam is a friendly neighbour and a comprehensive strategic cooperation partner of the RoK. “Through this festival, I hope that you will remember Vietnamese girls who were born and grew up in a country that has a rich cultural tradition. “Everybody should know that relations between the RoK and Vietnam are developing well in all areas, and that Vietnam will be an economic power in the future. “I hope that this festival is a good chance for local people and multi-cultural families to know more about each other,” said Park, who used to serve as the first RoK ambassador to Vietnam. Vietnamese Minister Counsellor Nguyen Manh Dong appreciated the KOVIFA and the RoK Ministry of Gender Equality and Family for organising four such festivals in four districts in Seoul capital in September 2012. “The festival offers a chance for RoK people to get a better understanding of RoK-Vietnam families, as well as the cultural tradition, customs and life of the Vietnamese community in the RoK,” said Dong. In his welcoming speech, Goh Jae-deuk, head of Seongdong district, confirmed that the local administration pays special attention to the lives of multi-cultural families. “Together with the development of the friendship and strategic cooperation, the Vietnamese community in the RoK, as well as the RoK community in Vietnam, now numbering more than 130,000, serve as a bridge between the two nations through friendship and blood relationships,” said Goh. “We will provide the best possible conditions for foreign expatriates, including those from Vietnam, to live, study and work in Seongdong,” he said.
