Talisman Vietnam, East Meets West (EMW) Foundation, the Department of Education and Training, and Study Promotion Association from Phu My District of Binh Dinh Province on Thursday celebrated the handover of a drinking water system and latrines for two local secondary schools.
Over 1,000 students and teachers from My An Lower Secondary School in My An commune and My Chanh Tay Lower Secondary School in My Chanh Tay commune will benefit from this project, which provides access to clean drinking water during the school day and improves the schools’ sanitation facilities with hygienic restrooms. The schools are located in two impoverished communes in Phu My District and previously the students lacked access to clean water, so students used to bring water with from home to school everyday.
In addition, about 600 students and teachers at My An Lower did not have any latrines, while nearly 400 students and teachers at My Chanh Tay shared one old latrine.
Talisman, which is an oil and gas company with its headquarters in Canada, EMW and local authorities worked together with local masons and vendors to provide each of the two schools with a UV water filtration system and a latrine that includes one restroom for girls and one for boys. Each restroom has brick ventilated walls, a corrugated iron roof for privacy and rain cover, two pour flush toilets (double vault septic tank), a separate area for urination, and a hand-washing station with multiple taps.
