Hanoi hosts exhibition of Japanese KIRIGAMI
|
VietNamNet Bridge – An exhibition titled ‘World of KIRIGAMI: A Hundred Flowers & Words’ featuring art works by Japanese artist Kanako Yaguchi will be held at the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Hanoi from September 22 to October 21.
Kanako Yaguchi is highly acclaimed as a promising KIRIGAMI artist who adds new value on the traditional KIRIGAMI handicrafts by fusing contemporary ideas into them.
Many of Kanako’s original patterns have become standards in KIRIGAMI works and her cutting-edge patterns are used for new designs for Japanese traditional clothes likely the Kimono and Yukata, as well as for advertisements. Kanako has also published many books on KIRIGAMI and often appears on TV in Japan as an instructor for making KIRIGAMI works at home.
Born in 1976, Kanako Yaguchi graduated from the Department of Design at Joshibi University of Art and Design, Japan. She currently works in the apparel industry and has had many solo exhibitions.
She also owns shops, designs logos and holds workshops on KIRIGAMI works. She has released many books in English including The Art of Decorative Paper Stencils 1 & 2 (Quarry Books, 2008, 2009).
KIRIGAMI (paper cutouts) is one of Japan’s traditional arts and a variation of Origami (folding paper).
These KIRIGAMI works are usually seen in Buddhist and Shinto festivals in Japan, decorative paper for New Year, Tanabata (The Star Festival), paper lanterns for fairs, paper toys for kids, wall paper and folk handicraft products.

Vietnamese-origin writer wins US National Book Award
|
VietNamNet Bridge – Lai Thanh Ha, a Vietnamese American writer, has won the 2011 National Book Award for Young People's Literature, a prestigious prize in the US.
Lai Thanh Ha.
Ha’s book “Inside Out & Back Again” tells the moving story of a 10-year old girl's journey to the US in 1975.
For the ten years of her life in homeland, the girl has only known Saigon: the thrills of its markets, the joy of its traditions, the warmth of her friends close by, and the beauty of her very own papaya tree.
But when the war reaches her home, she and her family are forced to flee Saigon, and they board a ship headed toward hope in a new country.
In America, the girl discovers the foreign world of Alabama: the coldness of its strangers, the dullness of its food, the strange shape of its landscape, and the strength of her very own family.
Born in 1965, the book’s author began her hard life in the US and worked very hard to learn English and write books. She got many jobs to earn a living, but always spent a lot of time writing.
In her book, Ha recalls her memories of her father, who died during the war, and her mother who devoted her whole life working hard to raise up her six sons and three daughters.
Ha says she is writing another book about Vietnam, and expects it to be published soon.

Nguyen Truong Son wins first prize at Davines hair show
|
VietNamNet Bridge – On the evening of September 20, the most expected hair show in the year was held at the Hanoi Opera House, with the theme "Living Jewel."
Davines Hair Show 2012 to be held in Hanoi
The show brought together the leading hair stylists in Vietnam like Minh Tam, Tran Hung, Duc Thinh (the first prize winner at the world hairstyling contest 2007), Buu An and 10 contestants.
Hair designer Nguyen Truong Son won the top prize of the competition.
The show combined demonstrations of new hairstyles, fashion and music. The competitions of hairstylists wee arranged alternately, with 10 minutes for each hair designer (the hair sample had been 80 percent complete before going to stage). The first prize belonged to Nguyen Truong Son, with red dyed short hair.
Truong Son will be Vietnam's representative at the world hairstyling competition held in May 2013 in Paris.
Five years ago, Duc Thinh, the winner of this contest, won the first prize at the international hairstyling competition 2007 in Spain.
The 7-scene show was inspired by Greek mythology. To punish the mankind, Zeus created a beautiful woman named Pandore and sent her to the earth to be Epimethee’s wife. Zeus gave Pandore a box and told her to never open it.
The champion of the world hairstylist contest 2007 Duc Thinh and his design.
Seeing man live in the dark, Promethee broke Zeus’ rules to give the sacred fire to man. The human are not killed anymore because they have the weapons that only the gods on the Olympia have. But one day when Epimethee was away, Pandore is curious about the box and opened it. And wars, starvation, diseases occur around the world.
When the seeds of evil escape from the box, there is still a seed of hope in the bottom of the box. This seed is also a symbolic reward for the winner of this year's contest, for the purpose of sending hopes for Vietnamese hair designers.
