Si Phan Don means Four Thousand Islands, it refers to the Khong Island area in Mekong River in southern Laos just north of the Cambodian border. This 50km-long section of the Mekong River reaches a width of 14km during the rainy season, which is the widest it ever reaches. During the dry months the river recedes and leaves behind thousands of islands and islets. This area of the river is also famous for being the home to the endangered Irriwaddy dolphins.
