Babies are carried by women, sometimes older children and occasionally men in comfortable cloth baby carriers. They are functional items, securing, reassuring and protecting. The baby becomes an extension of the person carrying it and travels up the mountain paths, out to the fields or down to market. The styles vary greatly, but usually blend in with the mother's clothes. They are usually decorative with patterns worked in embroidery, batik or applique which can offer symbolic protection against evil spirits. |
