Vietnam with preservation of biodiversity in forest ecosystems
(CPV) - A workshop tilted “Preservation of biodiversity in forest ecosystems in Vietnam” was held in Hanoi on July 25. The event was co-organized by Vietnamese Business Council for Sustainable Development (VBCSD) under the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Department of Nature Conservation (DoNC) under the Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). VBCSD, GIZ and DoNC are currently elaborating ways forward to support responsible tourism in and around protected areas for effectively combining private sectors engagement with biodiversity conservation. Recently approved legislations provide new investment models for involving the private sector, especially the tourism industry, into the conservation of biodiversity in protected areas. This can be seen as a great chance for both the private and public sector. In a first step a survey focusing on the challenges, opportunities and specific needs for investment and operating tourism business in protected areas was conducted. Opinions of different tour operators and tourism investors active in protected areas, as well as relevant governmental bodies were obtained during interviews. The workshop aims to bring together different stakeholders from the public and private sector and to foster the exchange of experiences and ideas on responsible tourism in protected areas. An introduction on the relevant legislations, the results from the conducted study on responsible tourism in protected areas as well as a case study from the private sector will provide the basis for a fruitful and open dialogue. Invited participants include representatives from the private sector such as tour operators and tourism investors, as well as government office, DoNC, General Department for Tourism, leaders from some national parks and the international donors community (EU, JICA) and the non-governmental organizations (WWF, SNV) active in the field of responsible tourism. The GIZ on behalf of the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development, in collaboration with MARD is implementing the first phase of the project “Preservation of biodiversity in forest ecosystems in Vietnam” which lasts from August 2010 until July 2013. DoNC is the counterpart of this project. The project long-term objective is to improve personnel, institutional, technical, financial and legal conditions to preserve biodiversity in forest ecosystems in Viet Nam, particularly at national level and in protected areas./.
