The first solo exhibition by Nhan Dan (People) newspaper photojournalist Vu Anh Tuan, entitled ‘Feelings about Truong Sa’, opened at the Information and Exhibition House, No. 93 Dinh Tien Hoang Street, Hanoi on August 7.
The 68 photographs on display feature the beautiful natural landscape of the Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago and the daily lives of the soldiers stationed there.
The displayed photos were selected from the thousands Tuan took during his 11 day field trip to Truong Sa in April this year.
Speaking at the opening, Colonel Nguyen Ngoc Tuong, an official from the Vietnam Naval High Command, said that the exhibition offers fresh insight into Truong Sa, which has always received great care and support from the Vietnamese Party, State and people.
Through Tuan's lenses, even ordinary phenomena such as rain, sunshine, rainbows, sunsets and sunrises, seem glorious within the boundless space dominated by the sea and sky. Truong Sa is not somewhere far away; it is always in the heart of every Vietnamese citizen and an inseparable part of Vietnam.
“It was my first trip to Truong Sa and when I reached there, I was stunned by the beauty and vitality of the archipelago. I was even more impressed by the youthfulness and optimism of the soldiers there, who always bear in mind that the sea and islands are their home,” Tuan said.
“I just learned about naval soldiers from books at school, but these photos give me a real and vivid look at the soldiers as well as their lives and work on the archipelago,” said Nguyen Duc Khoi, a sixth-grader from Trung Vuong secondary school in Hanoi.
Khoi also said he hopes to have a chance to visit the archipelago when he grows up.
The exhibition, co-organised by Nhan Dan newspaper and the Vietnam Association of Photographic Artists, aims to promote patriotism and raise people’s awareness of protecting the country’s sovereignty over its sea and islands.
When the exhibition closes on August 14, photographer Tuan will present all of his pictures to the Naval High Command to express his gratitude and appreciation for their contributions to defending the country.
