A symposium on preserving Vietnamese language in Vietnamese families in abroad will take place between July 14th - 15th, 2012 in the headquarters of the Institute of Vietnamese Studies in Westminster, California, the US.
The main purpose of the symposium is to maintain Vietnamese language in Vietnamese families abroad in the current period and support means for the young overseas Vietnamese generation through mother-tongue language so that they can talk with, contact and closely exchange with friends of fellow-countrymen in over the world.
The content of the symposium on preserving Vietnamese language in overseas Vietnamese families this time is anticipated to have five main areas, including discussing the situation of using Vietnamese language overseas in Vietnamese families; relations between Vietnamese studies in school and in the family; influence of Vietnamese language on family’s life, especially communication between generations with each other; essence of Vietnamese language abroad at present; and demand of preservation of Vietnamese language in overseas Vietnamese families, especially young generations.
According to Mr. Nguyen Minh Lan, member of the Management Board of the Institute of Vietnamese Studies and representative of the organization board of the meeting, the institute has sent invitations to 17 professors and scholars to write speech on five of the above issues. The Vietnamese Youth Education Association in Virginia state has also received the invitation to attend the symposium.
The Institute of Vietnamese Studies has been teaching Vietnamese language based on phonologic method. “This method is synthesized from contributions of professors and scholars at recent symposiums and published into a textbook named “Teaching reading and writing Vietnamese language” under the main editor of Professor Tran Ngoc Ninh. The textbook has been popularized at Centers of Vietnamese language in at least seven states in the US. Over the nearly the past four years of applying this method, the Centers of Vietnamese language in states, especially Vietnamese teaching classes held at the institute all recognize that the method has gained satisfactory achievements,” Nguyen Minh Lan said.
Over more than 20 years of operation, the Institute of Vietnamese Studies in the US has carried out many overseas Vietnamese cultural works. Also through this institute, professors, scholars, cultural researchers and writers usually give counseling and advice to Vietnamese teachers.
The institute has a management board including nine people and other seven boards such as board of library, board of teaching… In addition, the institute also has a section to support technique practice and publishing.
Almost every weekend, the institute organized activities such as discussion of current affairs, internal or external economic issues or issues relating to literature, art culture or language./.
