VietNamNet Bridge – In the first three months of 2012, Vietnamese cinemas earned VND273 billion (around $13 million). This is an impressive figure compared to previous years, a seminar reported.

During this time, Vietnamese cinemas released many Hollywood blockbusters like Underworld 4, Harry Potter 7.2, Sherlock Holmes 2, Journey 2, The Lorax besides some local movies.
Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan, vice chief of the Vietnam Cinema Agency, said at a seminar on July 25 that Vietnam’s cinema revenues in 2000 was only $2 million. The number was $26 million in 2010 and $35 million by the end of November 2011.

According to reports from provinces, 14 provinces in Vietnam do not have a single cinema.
Experts said that the world is replacing celluloid films with digital technology, but in Vietnam only several cinemas in big cities like Hanoi and HCM City have digital projectors.
In addition, Vietnam has not had standards on film ratings, except for NC-16 (not for viewers of less than 16 years old).
Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan said that the national film censorship council spends at least two days a week to examine films, based on the Law on Cinema.
Vietnam currently has 93 cinemas and cinema complexes, totaling 215 projection rooms. There are 72 state-owned cinemas, with 104 projection rooms, totaling 26,279 seats. Private firms manage 21 cinemas, with 111 projection rooms and 19,768 seats. Private cinemas are mainly located in big cities like Hanoi, Haiphong, Da nang, Bien Hoa (Dong Nai province) and HCM City.
