VietNamNet Bridge – Jason Viet Tien, 18, a Vietnamese student in the UK, became a “phenomenon” of the X Factor UK music competition.
Appearing in episode 2, the Vietnamese student from Hanoi, who is studying at Birmingham, stirred up the public. He did not have a perfect voice but Viet Tien was highly appreciated by jury members for the way of showing his feeling in a ballad song “I have nothing” of Whitney Houston.
Viet Tien surprised the audience everyone with his decent voice after he charmed his way into jury member Tulisa Contostavlos's heart, despite continuously pronouncing her name wrong.
Speaking offstage he said: 'I love Tulisha, I love to kiss Tulisha on the lips, I love her like so, so much, I don’t know, I just love her, love her, love her so much! Not the way I love my mum, but I love you Tulisha. I love you!
'I have been waiting for this moment my whole life, I want to see her and tell her how much I love her.'
He described Tulisa as lovely, brilliant, talented, amazing and gorgeous, before going on stage to continue his love assault face to face.
Armed with a single rose Jason said: 'Hi Tulisha, You are amazing and beautiful, I love you with all my heart.'
Louis Walsh and Gary Barlow tried to explain to him that he was saying his beloved's name incorrectly but after several attempts he still couldn't get his tongue around it.
After being invited by Louis, Jason made his way down the steps to the judges table where he presented Tulisa with the rose and received a kiss on the cheek for his troubles.
Delighted that she accepted his romantic gesture Jason sang out I Have Nothing, by Whitney Houston, and although the vocals weren't perfect he did enough to impress the judges.
Guest judge Geri Halliwell said: 'You were better than I thought you were gonna be. That’s a hard song to sing so well done.'
Judge Louis added: 'It wasn’t note perfect but you’ve got this likeability thing and that’s why the whole audience went with you and I want to hear more.'
Gary couldn't help but poke fun at Jason and said: 'Bags of potential, a great voice in there, I thought that was absolutely 'splendid'!'
The best comment, however, came from Tulisa who admitted that she had been won over the youngster. She said: 'Jason, I think I’ve found a new toy boy. Loved it, absolutely loved it...I loved the rose, I loved you and I loved the performance, how about that. 'You wanted my love, you’ve earned it, I love ya.'
With four very strong yes' from the judges, the student was sent through to the bootcamp stage.
Viet Tien has studied marketing and PR at the Birmingham City University for over two years. He used to be a student of the HCM City-based Tran Phu High School. He competed at a school vocal contest in Vietnam in 2009.
