A delightful dish of sushi is not all that is on offer at Chen in HCMC’s District 1 - Photo: Derek Milroy
I have to confess I absolutely love sushi and although there are tons of Japanese restaurants in the city specializing in this ngon (delicious) treat, I highly recommend Chen in Nguyen Trai Street.
Nguyen Trai itself is one of my favorite streets in the city for its food, fashion and flicks at the comfortable Galaxy cinema.
Anyway, onto Chen which is unique in that you can have all your sushi and Japanese delights in a very beautiful location with great seating and nice view of the street outside, and Saigonese favorite hotpot dishes.
Normally when we go, we have a bit of both, normally opting for some prawn and vegetable tempura as well as sushi favorites like salmon, tuna, eel and cucumber, clam, mackerel, monkish to name but a few.
And of course we can’t forget hotpot favorites lau hai san (seafood), lau nam (mushroom), lau tu xuyen (Sichuan) and lau thai (Thailand).
They also do a special in xuc xich tuoi nong (fresh grilled sausages) which are off the chart.
Barbecue classics like bo nuong (beef), muc nuong (squid), ca nuong (fish) and vu de nuong (goat breast) also go down very well on the stomach.
Of course being a Japanese establishment they are always pushing you to try Sapporo beer but it’s a bit too fizzy for me, I do like Kirin which goes down well with any meal.
The good news is that Chen also has restaurants in Le Duc Tho in Go Vap District, Nguyen Thien Thuat in District 3 and Khu Pho Sky Gardens in Phy My Hung, District 7.
