Student wins ‘eco' diary contest
VietNamNet Bridge – Nguyen Quynh Tram, 12, of Marie Curie Secondary School claimed first prize at the Panasonic Eco Picture Diary Contest 2012 on Sunday, enabling her to participate in the competition's Global Awards Ceremony in Kyoto, Japan, this November. The contest, which ran from June to August, drew the participation of 460 students from secondary schools in Ha Noi, each of whom were asked to draw pictures and create text related to environmental protection. Every day of the diary was illustrated by colourful and lively pictures, made from various materials such as recycled paper, clay, bamboo, plastic bottles, and nylon bags. Tram began her five-day diary with a biology class entry: "Our teacher keeps telling us about environmental pollution but never discusses any solutions. I'm thinking of planting a tree in a used plastic bottle, I mean ‘recycling' it." Tram then developed her initial idea by designing an eco-area to be built in the front yard of her house, which accommodates plants, a pond and fish, before ending the diary with the following message. "The earth is the only planet with living objects – people, and also the only planet with plants. Were plants born to be destroyed by human beings? For the sake of our future, and for a green planet, we should act today, even if it is only a small act." The contest was launched globally by Panasonic in 2009 to appeal for environmental protection awareness, and to promote the writing and drawing abilities of elementary and secondary school students. It officially kicked off in Viet Nam in 2011 with 130,000 entries from 37 countries. "The contest not only encourages students to express their dreams and creative ideas, but also involves them with the community in protecting the environment, said Panasonic Corporation general director Shinichi Wakita at the awards ceremony on Sunday.
