Quan Oc Oanh soothes the pain of a rainy day
|
The rainy season affects some people worse than others but you have to grin and bear it until the lovely sunshine is once more upon us in a few months.
There is certainly no shortage of things to do like cinema or shopping at one of the many downtown plazas when the heavens send down a message.
I don’t know if it is coincidence or not but for some reason during rainy weekends we always seem to find our motorcycle leading its way to District 4 and Vinh Khanh Street in particular as if it has a mind of its own.
And we are by no means the only ones as our favorite seafood eaterie Quan Oc Oanh is packed out every weekend and most week days because the food on offer is absolutely delicious, honestly you just have to try this place out.
They must have around 20 different types of snail in all shapes and sizes including oc huong, oc nhung, oc dua, oc len and oc giac. And of course the old favorites such as so diep (scallop), so duong (oyster) and cang ghe and cang cua (crab) to name but more than a few dozen.
In eight hours it is estimated the eaterie sells at least 500 kilos of snails as they are only open from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Around four years ago Quan Oc Oanh started off as a small seafood outlet on Vinh Khanh Street but now it almost fills the whole block and there never seems to be enough seats to go around.
But this is by no means your normal beer and seafood crowd who litter the streets late at night, as most people are on the soft drinks as they are here for the food not the beverages.
When the rain comes down the dozens of members of staff speedily put up the covers to make sure their guests can still sit on the street and take in the atmosphere watching the drizzle or downpour from a safe distance.
Sitting there scoffing down some top quality seafood, makes you forget the miserable weather and ensures your weekend is memorable.
Quan Oc Oanh is located at 534 Vinh Khanh Street in Ward 8, HCMC’s District 4 .
