Everyone loves to recall pleasant memories, especially elderly people who like telling old stories about their past love, their victories, their hardship as well as their dreams for their children and grandchildren.
At the age of nearly 70 with four decades as a working artist, Le Trieu Dien recalls the ups and downs of his life, memories of time and emotions with solo exhibition ‘Ky uc goi ve’ (Called back memory) which will open at the downtown Phuong Mai Gallery on Sunday.
The show will feature 32 oil on canvas pieces in an abstract style which is his forte. The paintings lure visitors not by lines or color blocs but by symbols such as arrows, triangles, circles or spiral squares. They represent experience, past flows, emotions and vibrations of life and vestiges of time.
‘People say memories will limit my creativeness but to me, memories inspire my creativeness and nourish my emotions day by day,” said artist Dien.
His paintings mostly depict countryside scenery, with rivers, vegetable gardens, rice fields and the peaceful life in the Mekong Delta.
“Layers of colors overlapping express vestiges of time and traces of long-gone dreams and hopes while the symbol of triangles are seen as Vietnamese house roofs,” said Quang Cuong, owner of Phuong Mai Gallery. He added that those symbols of life make Dien’s paintings special and distinguished.
Born in 1943 in the Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre, Dien studied at Phu Tho Polytechnic College-Saigon. He has offered many solo exhibitions around the country and joined group shows in Singapore, Malaysia and Japan.
The show also marks the opening of a new branch of Phuong Mai Gallery at 7 Phan Chu Chinh Street in District 1. The venue near by Ben Thanh Market is where visitors can admire art, enjoy coffee and take a panoramic view of the Ben Thanh area.
