The fourth international festival of traditional Vietnamese martial arts was opened on Wednesday night at Quy Nhon City’s stadium in the central province of Binh Dinh.
According to organizers, there were 69 teams from 27 nations and 28 local teams which helped raise the total number of participants to 1,500 people.
Binh Dinh was the hometown of Nguyen Nhac, Nguyen Hue and Nguyen Lu who were leaders of Tay Son farmers’ movement who helped the nation gain victory over the Chinese at the end of the 18th century. During this period Binh Dinh traditional martial arts had a dramatic development.
The locality, which has held the biannual event since 2006, hosted a grand opening ceremony before a music performance consisting of three chapters with the participation of 1,500 local disciples, actors and students. The first chapter named ‘Binh Dinh – the land of martial arts’ aimed to introduce the development of the province. With a war drum sound, actors performed some typical Binh Dinh traditional martial arts lessons. The second chapter named ‘Following the footstep of King Quang Trung and Tay Son movement’ reminded participants of the glorious victory under the control of the King in Gia Dinh, Rach Gam-Xoai Mut, Tam Diep and especially the bloody battle at Thang Long Imperial Citadel which saw national troops fight against 29,000 soldiers of the Qing army. Foreign athletes performed in the last chapter with a theme of traditional Vietnamese martial arts – convergence and pervasiveness.
