First ASEAN graphic art exhibition opens in Hanoi
VietNamNet Bridge – The first Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) exhibition of graphic art opened at the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum in Hanoi on August 6 to celebrate ASEAN's 45th anniversary (1967-2012). Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Le Khanh Hai (right) presents first prize to Thai artist Aonrudee Porn Chame. Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Le Khanh Hai said that the event aims to promote cultural exchange and understanding between ASEAN nations through the common language of art. The exhibition displays 130 graphic works created over the last five years by 77 contemporary artists from nine ASEAN countries including Brunei, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and host, Vietnam. The pieces on show were selected from 245 entries submitted to the competition, which was launched in mid 2011 by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in co-ordination with Vietnamese embassies in ASEAN countries and the embassies of ASEAN countries in Vietnam. The organising board presented 17 prizes to the best works in the competition. Aonrudee Porn Chame from Thailand won first prize for her work entitled ‘The Movement of Nature 2’. The abstract intaglio piece was highly appreciated by the Art Council for its harmonious composition, refined use of colour and professional technique. “I want to depict the slow motion as well as the vitality and power in every movement by Mother Nature,” said Porn Chame, a final year student from Chiang Mai University. Two second prizes were awarded to Pham Khac Quang from Vietnam for his work ‘Tu Phu’ (Four Places) and Sorrawee Decha from Thailand for the piece entitled ‘Cave’. Four third prizes went to Do Huu Quyet from Vietnam, Mabh Fuad B. Pathil from Malaysia, and Kraisak Chirachaisakul and Amnat Kongwaree from Thailand, and ten consolation prizes were given to other artists. Art Council member and painter, Thanh Chuong pointed out some differences between the work of artists from Vietnam and other countries in the exhibition. He said the Vietnamese artists paid more attention to portraying their sentiments and thoughts using the classic themes of war and landscape, while the foreign entrants' works are primarily in surrealist and abstract styles, with a focus on technique. “The exhibition illustrates the diversity and development of graphic arts in the ASEAN region, while providing a good opportunity for Vietnamese artists to exchange experiences with foreign colleagues in the field,” he said. The ‘ASEAN 2012 Graphic Arts Exhibition’ will last until August 16.
