Deep journey home for Do Tuan Anh

VietNamNet Bridge – ‘Faraway’ by Hanoi-based artist Do Tuan Anh will open on Thursday at Craig Thomas Gallery in the city’s District 1, inviting visitors on a journey deep within his own psyche as he puts his current life as a metropolitan husband, artist and father aside to go on a journey back to the halcyon days of his rural childhood.
To Anh, the countryside is the spiritual foundation which forms the basis of his soul, dominating his perception and approach to life.
“Faraway means to me everything that is distant in terms of space and time, but which has the power to pull a person closer to the basic attributes that combine to form the soul of an individual.”
The series of paintings were inspired by a taxi ride he took with a homesick Bangladeshi-born driver while on an extended stay in Germany in 2010, as sitting in the taxi decorated profusely with images and souvenirs from the driver’s home country, Anh awoke to a feeling of longing and nostalgia for his hometown.
With Faraway, the artist takes a step back from a broader societal focus and turns his attention towards an existential analysis of the importance of one’s memories, spiritual foundations and roots. Faraway is the artist’s psychic retreat back to an idyllic time that brings him peace and serves as his refuge from the hectic pace of modern life.
Faraway represents an evolution not only in terms of artistic outlook but also in his style. While his earlier works were often crammed with detail, metaphors and characters, the paintings of Faraway are more focused and reflective of the inner peace the artist is striving to achieve with his work. The individual paintings of the series are illustrative of this progression beginning with the densely symbol-laden Spirit Boat and ending with the final piece Fall Into which edges close to the border of pure abstraction.
The show runs to September 29 at the gallery, 27i Tran Nhat Duat Street in District 1.
