A recorded three-minute conversation which is supposed to be between the music director and the producer of Viet Voice, the Vietnamese version of The Voice vocal competition series, reveals that the results are possibly pre-arranged.
After episode 3 of the Battle phase was aired on the evening of September 9, a backstage clip was uploaded to the Internet. This clip shows emails exchanged between songwriter-singer Phuong Uyen, the music director of Viet Voice and some contestants, which reveal personal relations between them.
According to this clip, Phuong Uyen was supposed to force contestants to perform English songs. When coach Tran Lap wanted to change the song for Thu Thuy and Bao Anh from an English song into a Vietnamese song, Phuong Uyen did not agreed. She answered by email as follows: “Firstly, we have to choose the song that is suitable to the voice of contestants. Secondly, this song is unqualified to be performed in this show.”
The clip also includes a conversation which is supposed between Phuong Uyen and producer Tuong Vy. They talked about contestant H’zina Bya, who won the first prize of the HCM City Television Singing Contest.
According to them, this contestant usually spoke at random and if an English song is chosen for her, H’zina Bya will surely tell the media that the organizing board treats her unfairly. One of them stressed that how good H’zina Bya will sing, contestant Phuong Linh will be selected for the next round.
The next conversation in the clip is between one woman who is supposed to be Phuong Uyen and a contestant named Linh. Uyen, who called herself as “boss,” adviced Linh to choose a R&B song. “If you choose R&B, she will die immediately,” and “you have to sing your music genre, if you sing her music genre, you will die firstly,” the one who is supposed as Uyen said.
In the Battle round, Phuong Linh and Mai Khanh Linh sang “Price Tage” and Mai Khanh Linh was ousted.
A list of contestants for the live show is disclosed at the end of the clip. Accordingly, Bao Anh from the team of coach Tran Lap; Dong Lan of coach Dam Vinh Hung; Dang Thi Thu Thuy of coach Thu Minh and Thieu Bao Trang of coach Ho Ngoc Ha--will be the top four contestants.
H’Zina Bya
The public was angry after the clip was launched on the Internet. Most of them believed that this is a true story. “Gameshow is only a game. In Vietnam, fraud occurs even in football, let alone gameshows. Let’s learn from it. You should watch it for fun and should not trus it,” one commented.
“What Bao Yen and Thanh Lam (famous singers in Vietnam) talked about the coaches of Viet Voice is completely true. They are puppets in the hands of producers. It’s disappointing!” another wrote.
Phuong Uyen admits her mistake in Viet Voice scandal
Songwriter-singer Phuong Uyen, music director of the Viet Voice vocal competition, admitted her voice is in the 8-minute clip which appeared on the Internet on September 9.
A representative of Cat Tien Sa, the producer of Viet Voice, told Thanh Nien that all members of the organizing board and coaches could not sleep after the clip was posted on the Internet on the night of September 9, immediately after episode 3 was aired.
They attended an urgent meeting in the morning of September 10 to seek solutions for the scandal.
“Phuong Uyen admitted her mistake in this case,” Cat Tien Sa’s representative, who wanted to be anonymous, said. This person said to not get cross with Uyen because he or she understood and witnessed Uyen’s efforts and enthusiasm for the Viet Voice 2012.
The same day, H’Zina Bya, one of the contestants who was mentioned in the clip, told VietNamNet that she had not been forced to leave the competition early and she could “sing English songs not as badly as Phuong Uyen thought.” Bya said she withdrew from the competition because of health problem.
Cat Tien Sa met with contestants of Viet Voice on the afternoon of September 9. Today, September 11, the organizing board is holding a press conference to explain about the scandal.
