Canada and Vietnam established diplomatic relations in August 1973 but earlier interactions had taken place dating back to the early 1950s when Canada was a member of the International Commission for Supervision and Control (starting in 1954).
Canada’s relations with Vietnam are expanding, particularly through rapidly-increasing trade and investment and a prominent CIDA presence. Vietnam continues to be one of CIDA’s 20 countries of focus and bilateral trade reached over 1.7 billion Canadian dollar last year. High-level political engagement has increased in the past five years, including a visit by Canada’s Governor General David Johnston in November 2011.
The two nations share membership in multiple multilateral forums, including ASEAN, in which Canada is a Dialogue Partner, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, the World Trade Organization, the ASEAN Regional Forum, the Francophonie and the UN.
Especially, there is an active 250,000-strong Vietnamese-Canadian community in Canada. Several trade, cultural and charity delegations to Vietnam have been organized with Vietnamese-Canadian involvement./.
